What is the best laser for my skin?
Treating Sun Damage
Nov 2, 2020
A phenol peel, like The Perfect Derma Peel, will definitely brighten your skin, but it won’t get rid of the damaged melanocytes, the cells which are producing the extra pigment causing the solar lentigenes (brown spots) in your skin. To actually get rid of those damaged cells, you need treatment with a device called an IPL (Intense Pulsed lLght). My favorite IPL device is the LimeLight from Cutera because it will treat both the solar lentigenes and diffuse redness which can often be seen w…

Acne and Acne Scars
Oct 16, 2017
Thank you for your question and photo. Based on what can be seen here, it appears that you still have active acne in addition to box scars and “ice pick” scars. The first step in treating acne scars is to get the acne under control. This usually requires a combination approach with an anti-inflammatory diet, appropriate products for your acne including retinoids and topical antibiotics, and possibly acne peels. Once the acne is under control, the scars can be addressed. The most eff…

Fractional CO2 for Acne Scar Treatment
Oct 16, 2017
Thank you for your question and photo. Based on what can be seen here, it appears that your skin is light enough that you could safely have a fractional CO2 procedure. We regularly get excellent results with this procedure for acne scar treatment, but it can only be done in patients with light to medium skin tones. For the best results, you should expect 7 days of swelling and redness. Please consult in person with a local physician to determine the best course of action. Good luck!
What is the best treatment to rid the dark spots from my face?
Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation from Acne
Oct 16, 2017
Thank you for your question. The first step in treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne is to get the acne under control. This usually requires a combination approach with diet, appropriate products for your acne, peels or HydraFacials, and Possibly Laser Genesis or even PDT (PDT is not an option if your skin is dark). Once the acne is under control, the hyperpigmentation can be addressed; and the choice of therapy depends on your skin color. I see you’re from G…

Acne on Forehead and Side of Face
May 4, 2017
Thank you for your question. Given that your skin was relatively clear for four years and suddenly began breaking out on your forehead and the side of your face without getting oily in these areas, it would be interesting to find out whether you changed your hair care products at the time that your skin changed. From the picture, it appears that you have inflammatory lesions which tend to respond well to some combination of topical prescription products, oral antibiotics,…

Acne vs Rosacea
May 4, 2017
Thank you for your question. Redness and blemishes on the nose can be acne or they can be a sign of rosacea. Rosacea is not a disease that can be cured, but a chronic condition that can be managed with avoidance of dietary and lifestyle triggers, and some combination of topicals, oral antibiotics, and lasers. I recommend you see a skin care physician who can evaluate this possibility. Best of luck.
Can I use a peptide serum before tretinoin and a peptide night cream afterwards?
What order to apply topicals
May 4, 2017
This is an excellent question. In our practice, we advise patients to apply prescription topicals before non-prescription topicals. Within each group, we recommend applying products in order of decreasing clarity, meaning clear prescription topicals first, then opaque prescription topicals, then clear non-prescription topicals, and finally opaque non-prescription topicals. Best of luck.
