Statement: Dr. Ram Kalus is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Tel Aviv, Israel, with over 32 years in practice. He specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast, body, and face, with a focus on breast enhancement procedures—including breast augmentation, mastopexy, breast reduction, and immediate and delayed breast reconstruction, along with revision breast reconstructions that may have been performed elsewhere in the past—as well as tummy tucks, labiaplasty, and complete mommy makeovers.

The founder of Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas, as well as his practice in Tel Aviv in 2017, Dr. Kalus takes pride in spending as much time as necessary with his patients to answer all of their questions, so they are confident about their surgical journey, and to perform the best possible operation for them. “Much of the anxiety surrounding plastic surgery is the unknown, and fear of a bad outcome,” he says. “We try to dispel and address both concerns for every patient.”

Dr. Kalus’s decision to become a plastic surgeon was due to his lifelong appreciation of aesthetics and the physical skill that’s required to create a beautiful outcome. “When I discovered my love of working with my hands and began to understand the power of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, I became more and more drawn to the specialty,” explains Dr. Kalus.

He is also inspired by the influence a person’s confidence in their physical appearance can have on their life. “The extent to which we can positively impact a patient’s self image with our knowledge and skill is both humbling and gratifying,” he says.

Although he specializes in aesthetic surgery of the breast and face, Dr. Kalus makes no distinction between aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. “A breast reconstruction is no less an aesthetic operation than a breast augmentation. A reconstruction of a nose or forehead defect is no less an aesthetic procedure than a rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty,” he says. “My absolute cardinal principle is to leave the patient appearing as though they never had surgery.”

Dr. Kalus also enjoys performing aesthetic facial reconstruction, as it respects the complex topography of the face as much as the anatomy, and makes every effort to leave the patient with an “unoperated” appearance. He is also known for his expertise in both primary and secondary labiaplasty. “This procedure is less frequently discussed, yet the need for which is clearly underserved from the standpoint of women suffering needlessly from labia minora hypertrophy, or disfigurement from improperly performed primary procedure,” explains Dr. Kalus. “This can be a source of significant improvement of quality of life for countless patients.”

After earning his medical degree from Boston University, Dr. Kalus completed his general surgery training at Hartford Hospital and the University of Connecticut. He then underwent plastic surgery training at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, and in Paris, France at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kalus has been an active member of several prestigious medical societies. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Kalus also held the roles of Past President and Treasurer of the South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Recovery time for a flight attendant after a tummy tuck & BBL?
Six weeks
Nov 19, 2023
Thank you for your question and photos. Clearly your question should be directed to your surgeon. We all have different protocols for our operative techniques and post-operative management, but as a rule I tell most of my patients that six weeks is realistic to feel 90-95% recovered and to resume exercise and remove restrictions. This may vary with they type of surgery, your individual healing process, and presumes no complications. Best of luck to you.
Would a full or mini tummy tuck help correct deformities from previous Bodytite procedure? 13 years
Lower only…
Nov 18, 2023
Thank you for your question and photo. An examination in person would be required to properly evaluate you, but from the photo alone it appears that a lower (mini-) abdominoplasty may help achieve a smoother more aesthetic lower abdomen. Please consult with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon whose aesthetics appear to align with your own based in hot or her Before and After gallery. Best of luck to you.
Asymmetry of scars, breast lower breasts and drain plug hole. Can I expect to gain symmetry in time
Thank you for your question and photos
Nov 11, 2023
It appears that you are very early in your post-operative healing and recovery. It takes a full year for a scar to completely heal and mature, and hopefully the scars will be minimal or close to invisible, in which case any asymmetry in the scar placement will be irrelevant.

It is best to stay in touch with your surgeon and follow his or her recommendations. If you do not feel comfortable with your surgeon then I recommend a second opinion in person. This far it appears you have a very…

Breast augmentation results are uneven – is it fair to be disappointed?
Sorry to hear…
Nov 11, 2023
Thank you for your question and photos. It is always disappointing when we see an unhappy patient. In the case of breast asymmetry such as yours it is unrealistic to obtain perfect mirror image symmetry since there are some anatomic differences that can’t be corrected with surgery. That said, I believe the most important aspect of symmetrical breasts needs to be the upper pole, which is what is seen by most of the world in a bathing suit or bra, and even through clothes. Your lower breast i…
Any real upper pole difference between SRX and SSX when under the muscle?
Short answer: No.
Nov 4, 2023
The feel of an implant in one’s hand does not precisely translate to what the breast feels like with this implant or that, especially when under the muscle. Ask yourself if you want the softest possible breast or slightly firmer, but the difference is essentially imperceptible. Best of luck to you.
Could I have less chance of experiencing BII since my body has already done well with silicone?
Good question.
Oct 29, 2023
Thank you for your question. BII is a poorly understood clinical description that suggests that silicone may in certain cases act as an immune system trigger that may result in a seemingly ink related constellation of symptoms or signs. We still do not have any definitive evidence that BII exists, but the fact that you had a silicone nasal implant with no systemic symptoms does not necessary suggest that you will or will not tolerate future breast implants well.

The vast majority of women…

Tuberous breast correction gone wrong? How to fix?
Thank you for the question…
Sep 28, 2023
Sorry to learn you are disappointed from your result. An examination in person would be required to properly evaluate your breasts and see if there is anything that can be done to help you achieve a more pleasing outcome. That said, from your photos it appears that your asymmetry was significant, and that your fault is actually quite good. It is possible that in certain clothing the appearance is mod your breasts concerns you, but I would recommend airing all of your concerns with your…
Will 350 cc implants help me achieve a D cup?
Good question..
Sep 27, 2023
Thank you for your question and photos. An examination in person would be required to properly evaluate you and determine which implant would be most suitable for you. If you have confidence in your plastic surgeon then you should trust his or her recommendations. In my own practice, a 350 cc implant in the setting of a mastopexy would be considered large. Bra cup size is notoriously inaccurate and the most important way to achieve a desirable outcome is to select images of women’s breasts…

Thank you for your question and photos. An examination in person is required to properly evaluate you and advise you specifically on your options. It all depends on your specific goals. How many cc’s do you recommend?
Maybe none…
Sep 20, 2023
Thank you for your question and photo. An examination in person is required to properly evaluate you and make specific recommendations. That said, based on your photo alone it appears that you may have adequate breast volume that would allow for a beautiful outcome after a lift alone. If you are certain you will want to be larger then a relatively small implant probably no larger that 250-275 cc would be adequate. I recommend the implant be positioned (above the muscle) subfascial (above the…
100 cc vs 125 cc – for lean petite frame?
Minimal difference…
Sep 10, 2023
Thank you for your question and photos. An examination in person would be required to precisely and specifically advise you, however a 25 cc difference in volume is minimal and the best way to answer the question for yourself is to ask yourself which is a preference on your part, “slightly bigger” or “slightly smaller”. I suggest you review photos of “favorites” and share those images with your surgeon such that he or she knows what your desired endpoint is. Then, in surgery, your surgeo…

Sep 9, 2023
Thank you for your question and photos. Congratulations on your weight loss accomplishment. An examination in person would be required to properly evaluate you but based on your photos alone it appears that an augmentation without a lift can help you achieve your goals. Please consult with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon whose aesthetics align with yours, based on his or her Before and After gallery. Best of luck to you.
