Will the tip of my nose drop after the cast is removed?
Rhinoplasty Recovery Time
May 13, 2019
It’s not unusual to see changes in the nose in the immediate post-operative period.  This occurs for a variety of reasons including the healing process and the resolution of swelling.
When surgeons perform rhinoplasty they utilize a series of detailed maneuvers on the underlying bone and cartilage.  In the initial post-operative period, these changes are often obscured by inflammation and swelling.  In some cases, as swelling resolves and nasal contour improves, the nasal tip m...
Thick Nose Skin or Excess Cartilage?
Rhinoplasty Evaluation
May 13, 2019
Optimal results for rhinoplasty surgery are dependent upon an accurate assessment of the patients anatomic deformity.  This requires a physical examination by a surgeon with experience in this area.  In most cases a relatively accurate assessment of the nasal anatomy can be made prior to surgery when patients have prominent nasal structures.
Unfortunately, even when an experienced surgeon examines a patient, it can be difficult to distinguish thickened nasal skin from excess ...
Upper Lip and Nose Tip Immovable After Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty Recovery Time
May 13, 2019
Stiffness of the nose and tip can occur following rhinoplasty surgery.  This phenomenon is more likely when extensive dissection is performed at the junction between the nasal cartilage and lip soft tissue.
Although it’s impossible to know exactly what was done in your case without an operative report, it appears that both bone and cartilage were removed from the distal nose.  In addition, it appears that the depresser nasi muscles were detached.

Piece of Thread from Stitches Left After Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty Sutures
May 13, 2019
The suture remnant that you describe is most likely a non-absorbable suture. If left alone this suture will probably work its way to the surface and can be easily removed. Unfortunately foreign material does have the potential to become infected. For these reasons, we generally recommend that these suture remnants be removed as soon as possible following surgery.
Should I Have an Open or Closed Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty Techniques
May 13, 2019
Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed through either an open or closed approach. With both of these techniques incisions are made on the inside of the nose along the nostril rim. When a closed approach is utilized no additional incisions are made. The surgeon is able to operate through these nostril incisions but doesn’t have direct visualization of the underlying anatomic structures. In contrast when an open approach is utilized a small incision is made across the columella that connects t...
Profuse Nose Bleeding After Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty Recovery
May 13, 2019
Although rare, post-operative bleeding is a well-known complication following rhinoplasty surgery. In the immediate post-operative period this bleeding is usually related to surgical trauma. When significant bleeding occurs, the nose is usually re-packed. In some cases endoscopic evaluation is necessary to determine the cause of bleeding. Under these circumstances, direct control of the bleeding site may be necessary.
Bleeding that occurs three years after surgery, proba...
Is There Any Hope my Nose Will Look Smaller?
Rhinoplasty Results
May 13, 2019
It’s not unusual for patients undergoing rhinoplasty to have prolonged swelling. In many cases this can make the nose look large and prominent. Several factors including the use of open rhinoplasty, fracture of the nasal bones, thickness of the nasal skin, and a previous rhinoplasty have been associated with prolonged swelling.
Most patients will note significant swelling for about two to three weeks following surgery. After two weeks, most patients are comfortable resu...
Possible to Thin out the Fatty Tissue on the Nose?
Rhinoplasty technique
May 13, 2019
It’s not unusual for plastic surgeons to encounter patients with thick nasal skin.  When this situation arises, the detailed sculpting of the underlying cartilage and bone that occurs with rhinoplasty may be hidden by a thick skin envelope.
Under these circumstances, it may be reasonable to thin fat from the under surface of the skin to create more definition of the underlying nasal structures.  This maneuver can improve nasal aesthetics, but isn’t without some risk.  ...

After Care Advice for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty Recovery
Feb 5, 2019
Rhinoplasty surgery is frequently accompanied by the development of scar tissue.  This scar tissue may occur in several locations including external incisions, the subcutaneous tissue and the internal nasal cavity.  Excess scar tissue can result in impairment of nasal function and alterations in nasal aesthetics.

Scar formation in the vast majority of patients is normal to some degree.  It typically responds to conservative management including massage and tincture of t...

How Long Should Numbness After Rhinoplasty Last?
Rhinoplasty Recovery
Feb 5, 2019
It’s not unusual for patients to have numbness and swelling following rhinoplasty surgery.  This is often the result of the surgical dissection and healing process.
In the vast majority of patients, these symptoms usually resolve spontaneously.  In most cases, swelling has resolved in three to four weeks, but may take up to a year to completely resolve.  Persistent swelling often results in the nose feeling stiff.

In most cases, numbness has resolved in three to f...

Can Blowing Your Nose Constantly, Touching and Pushing It Stretch Your Nostrils?
Changes in the nasal appearance
Feb 5, 2019
Blowing your nose, rubbing your nose and other forms of nasal manipulation will have no impact upon the size and shape of your nose.  The changes that you describe in your nose following your cold are probably related to swelling from your upper respiratory infection.  Your nose should return to normal as your swelling resolves with the resolution of your cold.
How Long Does It Take for Dissolvable Stitches to Dissolve? (Open Rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasty Sutures
Feb 5, 2019
It’s not unusual for surgeons to use absorbable sutures across the columella and on the inside of the nose when they perform open rhinoplasty surgery.  Depending upon the specific type of suture utilized, these sutures resorb between ten days and eight weeks following surgery.  In some cases, if they’re bothersome or protruding from the nostril they can be removed early.  After seven to ten days these sutures are no longer providing structural support and have therefore outlived their useful...
