I am a 51yo male, i am 5′ 7″ 195lbs. Is gastric sleeve a good option or is it too drastic?
Sleeve gastrectomy is reasonable for you
Sep 2, 2015
Your BMI is 31. This is Class 1 obesity. You have failed diets. It is very reasonable to have sleeve gastrectomy. It is less reasonable to have it in South Korea if you are going to come back here a few weeks later. What if you have a complication? Who will take care of you? Most surgeons will not touch you if they did not do your surgery. It is a long-standing tenant of good surgeons that they want take care of their complications and other surgeons should do the same. Furthermore, who will…
I weigh 235 and am 5’8. Am I a candidate for gastric sleeve?
Weight-loss surgery for lower BMI
Aug 7, 2015
Absolutely. With that height and weight your body mass index is 36. This is class 2 obesity. If you have certain health problems associated with your obesity, then this is considered morbid obesity. Whether your insurance will pay for the surgery is another matter. First you should call the number on your insurance card and ask if you have bariatric surgery benefits. You should then ask what their requirements are for them to pay. Usually, for a BMI between 35 and 40, a patient must have…
Am I a candidate for a gastric bypass?
Am I a candidate for gastric bypass?
Jul 11, 2015
Hi Kristy. Nothing you have indicated would disqualify you from having gastric bypass. You have a BMI of 36. For insurance to pay for your surgery you will also have to have other serious health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes or severe sleep apnea. If your insurance will not pay for your surgery, you can consider paying for the surgery yourself. If you do not have diabetes, I would also strongly consider sleeve gastrectomy. So, if you have failed the usual ways to lose weight,…
Should I have a bypass if Lap-Band failed?
Bypass after Lap Band
Jun 29, 2015
A recent study found that after 12 years 75% of gastric band had been removed for either complications or poor weight loss. You are not alone. A second opinion is never a bad thing. I do not know why your surgeon refuses to perform another weight-loss surgery, but that may be the right decision. On the other hand I have done numerous weight-loss surgeries after removal of gastric bands. Given that it seems your health is deteriorating because of your obesity, I would not hesitate to seek…
Leak from port. We need help and need to get this fixed. Where can we do this?
Where to get a port leak fixed
Jun 16, 2015
You should go to the surgeon who did your surgery. It is a long-standing tradition in the surgical profession that surgeons take care of their own patients. We want to know about our complications so we can learn from. We want to take care of our own complications. If your surgeon is no longer in practice, his partner should take care of you. If he did not have a oartner, he should have referred you to another surgeon and sent your records to that surgegoen, when he closed his practice, so…
I’m 5’5″ and weigh 230lbs. Do I qualify for gastric bypass surgery?
Does a BMI of 38 qualify for surgery?
May 20, 2015
You definitely qualify for surgery. You have struggled with your weight almost all your life and you have tried diets and they do not work for you. Weight loss surgery is the next, logical step. But will your insurance pay for it? That is another question and one you will have to ask them. Call them; the number is on your card. If they will not pay for it, you can pay for it on your own. I bet you will find it is much less expensive than you think and financing is available.

Surgery in Mexico
May 19, 2015
Hemorrhage is one of the more common complications of sleeve gastrectomy. So, yes, you are at risk for bleeding during and after the surgery. Therefore, I would be concerned about what would happen if you did have this or another complication from the surgery. Does you have a plan to deal with the cost of these complications? Perhaps you can go back to Canada and the healthcare system there will take care of your complication? I raise this issue because private pay patients in America are…
