How Long Does It Take Implants to Look “Normal” After Reconstruction Surgery?
Final shape/result takes time
Oct 1, 2023
This is a great question and the answer depends on a number of factors.
Implant based reconstruction can either be tissue expander at the time of mastectomy followed by implant placement at a second operation, or “direct-to-implant” placement at the time of mastectomy. While direct-to-implant is convenient, generally implant sizes are smaller than what could be achieved the tissue expanders although this depends on your preoperative breast measurements.
With regards to surgical swe…
What Does a Reconstructed Breast Look Like?
Reconstructed breast appearance
Oct 1, 2023
The appearance of breasts after mastectomy and reconstruction will depend on several things including the type of mastectomy performed, whether or not lymph nodes were taken, whether or not radiation was performed, whether or not there were complications after any procedures, and of course, what reconstructive technique was employed.
Nipple sparing mastectomy has the best aesthetic results, however, not every patient is a candidate for nipple sparing. Whether or not you are a candidate will…
What’s the Average Recovery Time of Breast Reconstruction for a Mastectomy?
Recovery after breast reconstruction surgery
Oct 1, 2023
Recovery after breast reconstruction depends on the type of breast reconstruction procedure you are having. The majority of patients after mastectomy receive implant-based reconstruction. However, due to complications of implants and/ radiation, or patient preference to avoid implants, many are choosing autologous (your own tissue) options.
For implant reconstruction, tissue expanders or silicone breast implants will be placed at the time of mastectomy. Most patients are kept overnight in…
Do Breast Reconstruction Tissue Expanders Cause Pain As They Expand?
Two ways tissue expanders may cause pain
Oct 1, 2023
There are 2 primary ways that tissue expanders may cause pain after placement for breast reconstruction. First, expansion involves accessing the port with a needle in the office. The needle prick sometimes causes pain. Now, sometimes there is loss of all or part of the sensation to the area of skin overlying the port resulting from the mastectomy. If this is the case, then there will be either no pain or diminished pain with the needle accessing the port. If there is sensation, then this…
Bottomed out immediately after surgery, – is effective breast revision possible?
Revision is possible and will help
Sep 9, 2023
I’m sorry you’re having these issues after breast augmentation. The good news, even though it would require more surgery, is that revision can definitely be done to fix this. The final surgical plan would depend on review of your medical history, prior operative report by your first surgeon, and physical examination. But there are two options that I would consider – 1) implant replacement with conversion to subfascial plane and breast fat grafting or 2) hybrid breast augmentation with imp…
Implant feels heavy and sagging on one side
Implants change over time
Sep 9, 2023
Thank you for your important question. After an implant based reconstruction, the implants will continue to change over time, and are subject to the same forces of gravity that affect everything else in our bodies as we age, leading to areas that sag and drop. How much that affects your implant reconstruction depends on several things – is the implant above the muscle or under the muscle (partially or totally). Implants partially under the muscle tend to get pushed downwards and towards the…
Can a kidney transplant recipient get tummy lipo?
Liposuction after kidney transplant
Jul 25, 2023
Thank you for your interesting question. While the transplanted kidney is generally speaking, in the lower abdomen area, it is not in the subcutaneous tissue of the abdominal wall. Typically the kidney is placed in the retroperitoneal space adjacent to the iliac vessels. You should seek out a board certified plastic surgeon who would be able to examine you and review a CT scan if needed to confirm location of the kidney and rule out any hernias prior to liposuction. Good luck!
