Which surgeon should i choose for breast augmentation? Certified by the American Board or not ?
When choosing to do plastic surgery it is highly recommended to seek out a board certified plastic surgeon.
Having said that you ultimately have to pick a surgeon you are comfortable. Find out what kind of training this surgeon had.
Many surgeons have been trained in plastic surgery but are not board certified, which requires significant additional testing.
Training is important because you need someone that can handle any potential complication you may incur.
The bottom line is you should make a few consultations with different board certified plastic surgeons to see if they have anything additional to offer and then determine who you feel most comfortable with.
In the end at least you know you have chosen a surgeon wisely, and one who is qualified. (Shain A. Cuber, MD, Edison Plastic Surgeon)
Board certified plastic surgeons.
Not everyone will have the same results after breast augmentation. It is in your best interest to choose a board certified plastic surgeon. A lot of times, patients choose to go to a surgeon who is not board certified because their prices are lower. It is a chance only you can choose to take. (Otto Joseph Placik, MD, Chicago Plastic Surgeon)
Much as we try we just cannot save some people from themselves. It sounds as if 3 recommendations are sufficient to shake your belief that specialization has merit. Therefore, I will not waste your time by telling you what you should do. But, I would like to ask you some questions:
– when this general suffers a complication, something that happens to all surgeons, WHICH hospital allows him to perform Plastic surgery cases in its facility? The complication could be you. You should know this answer. IF he has no Plastic Surgery operating privileges at the hospital – ask yourself why? Could it be that no hospital can afford the legal liability of untrained surgeons “practicing” Plastic Surgery within its facility?
– WHY would someone who trained in Surgery stop practicing what he trained in and instead practice in a field he did not train in (except for weekend courses)? The vast majority of Plastic Surgeons, myself included, fully trained and were certified in Surgery before training in Plastic Surgery. Very few of us still practice Surgery recognizing that to be at the top of our skills we must limit what we do and focus on doing the best with a smaller number of procedure. Breast augmentation by a general surgeon?
There is no particular reason why board-certified plastic surgeons would have a monopoly on good results. However, the reason you want to be looked after by a plastic surgeon rather than a general surgeon is for the added expertise and experience a plastic surgeon has to deal with unusual or difficult cases, or in the event of problems that a non-plastic surgeon might not have the training confront.
Of course even among plastic surgeons there are degrees of experience with breast augmentation. Take the time to research the best ones in your area. (Eric Pugash, MD, Vancouver Plastic Surgeon)
As a Board Certified General Surgeon and a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon myself, I can tell you that when I was done with my general surgery training I was in no way prepared to be the best breast augmentaton surgeon I could be. Two more years of training under the supervision of some of the world’s best breast surgeons plus 23 years of practice have made me what I am today.
There is so much more to breast augmentation than just putting in some impants. Personally, I would go to a great plastic surgeon only. (Richard P. Rand, MD, FACS, Seattle Plastic Surgeon)
Which surgeon to choose?
I agree with other posters that the true measure of a plastic surgeons merit is how they deal with issues when problems arise. There is a reason additional years of training are required before one is granted a diplomate to the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Taking a weekend course will not give anyone the requesite knowlege to deal with the breadth of possible issues that can arise. With all due respect, I would say buyer beware, and recommend you see a doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. (Jeffrey M. Darrow, MD, Boston Plastic Surgeon)
